The Wilderness Where Jesus was Tempted by the Devil
Before Jesus began His ministry, He was led into the wilderness by the Holy Spirit where He fasted for forty days and forty nights (see Matthew 4:1-11). During that time, the devil appeared to Jesus and tempted Him, trying to sway Him from God’s Word and deter Him from His divine mission to restore humanity. However, Jesus stayed true to His Father, and eventually the devil fled. In this week’s behind-the-scenes glimpse into the making of iBIBLE, see the arid wilderness that likely resembles the area Jesus would have been tempted in.
Here is a collage of images and photographs of the region where it is believed Jesus was tempted in the wilderness.
Next is a ground-level view of an arid valley. As you can see, not much if anything grew here. Seeing how remote and dry this place was, it makes sense that Satan tempted Jesus to “turn the stones into loaves of bread” (Matthew 4:3).
Finally, here is a view of the region from the perspective on top of the cliff. Satan told Jesus that He could have all the kingdoms of the world if He would only bow down and worship him instead of God. He also told Jesus to throw Himself off the cliff and have angels catch Him. Jesus, full of the Spirit, remained obedient to His Father’s will and didn’t listen to the tempter, setting an example for how we can follow God in our times of temptation and trial.
