Epic Scenes: She Is My Sister
When we think of plagues in Egypt, the first Bible story that might come to mind is the story of Moses and the ten plagues—but there are plagues sent to Egypt that were recorded even before! Enjoy this look at the epic scene from Episode 7 of iBIBLE.
As Abram followed the call of the Lord, a severe famine fell on the land. He travelled down to Egypt to escape the famine (see Genesis 12:10). Abram knew that his wife, Sarai, was very beautiful, and so he convinced her to say she was his sister in order that no one would try to kill Abram. In fact, Sarai was his half-sister (see Genesis 20:12).
This plan worked, and people told Pharoah how beautiful Sarai was. He called her to him and rewarded Abram greatly for her. However, the Lord sent plagues on him and all his house for Sarai’s sake:
But the Lord afflicted Pharaoh and his house with great plagues because of Sarai, Abram’s wife. So Pharaoh called Abram and said, “What is this you have done to me? Why did you not tell me that she was your wife? Why did you say, ‘She is my sister,’ so that I took her for my wife? Now then, here is your wife; take her, and go.” —Genesis 12:17–19 [ESV]
The Scriptures do not specify what type of plague was sent, only that it was great (see Genesis 12:17). The plague was represented in this iBIBLE video as a swarm of locusts because of the crippling effect of locusts in the midst of a famine. The design of a swarm of locusts gives a visual presentation of the devastation caused by the plague sent to Pharoah’s house by the Lord.
Pharoah’s house itself was modeled on early Egyptian architecture. You can see the building’s tall columns and flat roof, which would have been common during Abram and Sarai’s visit to Egypt.
