Epic Scenes: The Woman of Babylon
The book of Revelation is filled with vivid imagery! In this Behind the Scenes, take a look with us at the epic iBIBLE scene of John’s vision in Revelation 17 of the woman and the beast.
In this vision, the apostle John is carried into the wilderness and sees a “woman sitting on a scarlet beast that was full of blasphemous names” (Revelation 17:3). The woman is described as being:
“…arrayed in purple and scarlet, and adorned with gold and jewels and pearls, holding in her hand a golden cup full of abominations and the impurities of her sexual immorality...And I saw the woman, drunk with the blood of the saints, the blood of the martyrs of Jesus.” —Revelation 17:4, 6
The woman, who wore on her head the mysterious name “Babylon the great, mother of prostitutes and of earth’s abominations,” was sitting on a beast with seven heads and ten horns. Because the Scriptures do not say what each head of the beast looked like, iBIBLE artists drew different animals for each head to distinguish them from the woman and from each other, as each head and horn represents a separate king (see Revelation 17:10–12). Images of Jean Duvet’s Apocalypse engravings, as seen below, were used as references for the heads and horns of the beast.
These illustrative scenes in Revelation serve to remind us that, no matter how wicked the world may become, God is in control!
